A Day in the Life of a Slave

Tybalt glanced back at the thatched roof of his master's hut as he left the Palatine Hill to begin his daily tasks. Although his final destination was the Forum Boarium to the southwest, his best option was to walk north and travel through the Velia. He headed down the steep incline on his regular route passing by the neighboring huts.
The familiar chatter below indicated he was nearing the Roman Forum. A crowd was gathered outside a rectangular building called the Basilica Aemilia. As he walked by, he glanced through the openings in the walls and could see a man speaking to them. The next building he passed was the Temple of Vesta, which was not busy at this time of day.
Finally, he came to the edge of the Tiber River, and had reached the Forum Boarium. Little shops called Horrea were plentiful and vendors were selling merchandise such as cloths, salt, meats, and vegetables. He approached one, and had his pick of the freshest vegetables to bring back to the family he served.
Taking a look around him, he reveled in the atmosphere of diversity. It was nice that people of all classes could find a common space here. A group of men across from him entered into a temple to pray to the Gods for a plentiful harvest. This inspired him to plan a visit to the temple with his family the next time he came down the hill.
