Lucilla awoke this morning shortly
before the sun had rose in the large open room of the Villa where all of the
slaves who worked for the family of Lamatus dwelled. Today Lucilla was to travel
by foot to the Roman Forum to make purchases at the market for her master but
first she was to complete her household duties.
Lucilla began with the laundry from
the past week, washed then hung to dry. She then went into the kitchen to
assist the other women in preparing breakfast for the family. Once dismissed, Lucilla
started down Palatine Hill towards the shops of the Roman Forum.
Lucilla arrived by the fifth hour,
the busiest time for the marketplace. After visiting the velabrum, the general
market, for some common goods; Lucilla visited the vicus tuscus to
retrieve her master’s favorite spices then the argiletum to purchase
a book the master’s son had requested. Lucilla’s last stop was the waterfront
to purchase the meat for the next day’s meals.
As Lucilla walked from street to
street she ignored the harassing comments and gestures from noble men. Luckily,
she was not new to the marketplace and knew which areas to especially avoid. As
the tenth hour approached, Lucilla headed for Palatine Hill.
Once Lucilla arrived back, she
immediately joined the women cooking supper for the Lamatus family. Once supper
ended, Lucilla folded and returned the laundry she washed this morning, and
returned to her quarters for bed as to prepare for the next day of labor.
