The plot will begin when Pius is tired of the urban life of Rome, and he wants to leave the business He is about to move to a villa, when he is approached by his freedman colleague with a proposal for a grand heist, involving the games at the Circus Maximus. Many soldiers returning with huge loots from Spain are putting extreme bets on a certain race at the triumphal games being held in Rome. Pius agrees to do the final job.
The planning crew for the job includes a corrupt chariot rider, a freedman named Argentum, a Greek slave woman, a returning soldier of Caesar’s legions, and a jealous senator who wants to assist for hidden reasons. They assemble at the freedmen’s house, the director of operations, and devise a plan over an extravagant dinner. We hear of Caesar and understand the characters as they banter and voice their concerns.
All the pieces are set when the races begin. The diversions are made and the plan carried out to perfection, until somebody betrays the group and the reassembling is called off. Pius is forced to make with the money, and he is left with the obstacle of escaping Rome with several parties after him...
