Assignment 2

As Austinio stepped outside that hot summer day, the light filled his eyes and began a throbbing headache. He began to sweat as the sun mercilessly beat down on his brow. The night previous he was generously pouring watered down wine to Brutus, his master. Brutus drunkenly rambled about the dictator Julius Caesar late into the night. When he finally succumbed to the wine induced slumber, Austinio indulged himself in what remained in the wine jug. His first order of business that day would be to get some water. He flung his empty sack over his shoulder and began his short journey.
After trekking down the gently sloped side of Palatine Hill, Austinio splashed water upon his face. As he dried his face with his shirt, the Basilica Aemelia slowly came into focus. The smooth marble walls stood tall over the shops below. The market was alive with sounds of merchants and other slaves like himself purchasing items for their masters. A smell of burning wood filled Austinio’s nostrils certainly from the fire burning inside of the Temple of Vesta to his left.
His task for this trip was to walk to the Forum Boarium to get meat and cheese for Brutus’s supper tonight. Sluggishly moving, he made his way through the forum until the Temple of Saturn stood before him. To his left was the Basilica Iulia and to his right he could hear a man loudly speaking about taxes. Austinio figured that the man must be a politician, since people were gathering around him and since he was standing atop a pedestal.
The Forum Boarium was not far now. Austonio could see the arches of the Horrea. With his sack in hand Austinio hurried over with hope that once he returned to Brutus’s home, he could take a nap before completing the remainder of his day’s chores.
