As Varro awoke from his cot in the slaves quarters, he remembered his tasks assigned to him for the day by his master, Quintus. Varro quickly began getting ready and decided it was best for him to start heading toward the market at the Forum Boarium as his master had requested items for the midday meal. As Varro proceeded down the path leading away from Palantine Hill, where his master resided, he came upon the Temple of Vesta and took a second to stop and gaze upon its wonders. Realizing he would need to hurry, Varro proceeded toward the market and passed other slaves on their ways, usually with their masters, taking care of tasks. Since Varro had been a loyal slave to Quintus and his father before him, he was given privileges such as being able to attend to chores without supervision and was well known throughout the market.
Finally, Varro arrived and began to grab the various items to he needed, even needing to heckle the merchants from time to time. Once he had completed his list, Varro began to head home as it was almost noon and noticed the new shipment of slaves by the Tiber River being examined by potential masters. Remembering that he had once gone through that, Varro shuddered and was thankful that was far behind him and that he was owned by a kind and mild-tempered man. Once Varro returned home, he gave his items to the house slaves who began to pour the wine he had bought and prepare the meat from the market.
