Assignment 2
A walk through Rome
A new day dawned in Roma. The air, still
cold from the night before, already bustled with the activity of the
masses, many heading to the forum below. Merchants could be heard
hawking their wares in an ingratiating chorus and workers lumbered
through the crowds, carrying barrels of goods to the storehouses in
the Forum Boarium to be sold or to be shipped to distant lands. The
clamor was a roar amongst an otherwise quiet morning.
“At least It’s too early for those
damned carts,” a groggy Nemo muttered, thinking of the
clickity-clacky cacophony that arose after carts could legally enter
the city. The night before, Nemo's mistress had given him a list of
items to buy from market. Among the list were mostly common items,
olive oil, a herbal remedy to help with his master's sinuses, and
other odds and end such as this, all easily acquired. If he was quick
he could finish by midday and then if he were very lucky, and
neither master nor mistress had use for him, he could spend the rest
of the afternoon lounging by the
Tiber, reading scrolls lent to him by his master and enjoying the
heat of the sun.
As
he passed by the Basilica
Iulia, it's great white marble pillars towering above him, he heard
the shouts of a public crier, “The great and fearsome conqueror,
Julius Caesar returns to Roma! In honor of his return games will
be...” He payed the man little mind and kept walking for the forum
boarium to pick up the first item on his list. While some might
disagree, he had concluded Caesar was nothing but trouble for the
likes of him. Slaves and freed man and all the rest of their ilk were
nothing more than a bug to be squashed underfoot by that giant.
