Appius (previuosly referred to as Atilius
in the story) is a recently freed citizen of Rome or a part of the freedmen. He
has been a slave for as long as he can remember, in fact he does not even know
his real name. The name Appius was given to him by his late master. When his
master died, Appius was freed as stated by the will left by his master. Although
he does not even know if he was born in Rome or not, Applius knows no other
home. At 21 years old, Appius feels a loyalty to Rome. He has always dreamed of
the day the he will be able to become a Roman citizen and gain the rights that
accompany that standing. He felt lucky that his master educated him on the
history of Rome as well as its current position and he knows that with this
knowledge he will be able engage in political debates and even vote on some
matters.
Marcus Junius Brutus the Younger
was born in 85 BCE to a man of the same name. He is a strong and intelligent
man that was able to work his way up in the senate. He looked the part of a
Roman Senator with his strong physique, dark curly hair, and overall powerful
appearance. Brutus, as he was most commonly known, was often described as a
conservative politician, which is why he decided to go against Caesar in the
Roman civil war of 49 BCE. He was a strong supporter of the Roman Republic and
wanted it to be restored to its full strength. However Brutus chose the losing
side when it came to the civil war. Instead of condemning Brutus for betraying
him, Caesar offered him clemency and brought him back into the Roman Senate.
There had been a rumor that Caesar had been sleeping with Brutus’ mother and
that was the reason for the forgiveness. Since then, Caesar has considered
Brutus a good friend and appointed him to many different positions such as
governor of Cisalpine Gaul. Today Brutus serves as the Praetor and has a
promised position of Consulate in 41 BCE.
