Assignment 5

Assignment #5

Marcus, a valiant soldier in Caesars army, is now finally home after 14 years of service. Marcus holds the rank of Tribune, being elected to this position after 10 years of service. Marcus one of ten tribunes elected in 49 BCE.  Marcus could have been elected to tribune due to his father, Lucius Tillius Cimber, being a Roman Senator. Marcus instead wanted to prove himself and served in the army for 1 years before joining Caesar in 59BCE when he was elected Consul and then when Caesar became Governor of Gaul in 58BCE. Marcus was a brave soldier, risking his life countless times for the love of his country, Rome. He was a Roman first and a soldier second, but this all became extremely difficult in 49 BCE when civil war broke out.
Rome is where Marcus family lived and his duties in the army was for Rome and his family. In 49BCE, Marcus was elected Tribune in Caesar army. He valued this position with such respect, he knew his hard work had been valued. However, all of this ended quickly when Caesar crossed the Rubicon shortly after being elected to Tribune in 49BCE. Marcus has served allegiance to Caesar almost his entire military life, but now he was not sure what his duty in life anymore. He realized that staying with Caesar would involve him fighting newly appointed Dictator Pompey, but more importantly, he would be fighting against fellow Romans. Fighting for Rome has been his passion since his youth and this caused in him great deal of agony. He knew though, he would be stoned and beaten by his fellow soldiers. He could escape, but he knew his family would disown him for his actions. His only course of action was to continue fighting for Caesar. Marcus would follow Caesar to Spain and Africa chasing Pompey’s forces and finally beating Pompey in Spain at the battle of Munda.
Once Marcus returns him, he is very troubled about the past four years of service he had just campaigned. This all became exemplified on March 15 44BCE, when his father Cimber is a conspirator in Caesar assassination. Marcus cannot understand  what is happening to the country he has loved for so long. He has had the upmost respect for Rome, the army, Caesar, and his family; this was too much though and Marcus could not handle it anymore. He ended up committing suicide, realizing this is not what he was living for.
