Like
any ordinary day, Marc walked down the hall to the study in his house where he
met Flavia, an educated slave, who was hired by his family to teach him to read
and write. It was important for him to be educated because it was necessary for
young men to be prepared and knowledgeable in regards to agriculture, warfare,
public affairs, and other traditions that were a part of Roman culture. His
parents were very supportive of furthering Marc’s education and because there
were no public schools in Rome, having Flavia teach him was the best option
considering that both parents were engaged with other social matters.
Marc was an intelligent young man,
and as a senator’s son, he looked forward to the day that his father would let
him accompany him to the Senate like many other noble sons had done before. He
was nearing the age of sixteen, which meant that he was soon to be apprenticed
to a distinguished political figure. He knew this would be a big change for him
and his family because it would be a signifier of his manhood and independence.
As Marc was pursuing his studies
with Flavia, his father came into the room and asked to speak with him. He sat
down next to Marc and told him that he thought he was ready to take a trip with
him to the Senate. Marc’s eyes filled with joy and he smiled at his father
because he had been waiting so long for this day and it had finally come.
Flavia was overjoyed that her daily schooling with Marc had helped him progress
so far. Marc’s father left the room and Marc expressed his happiness to Flavia.
She applauded him for his accomplishment of receiving his father’s approval and
they concluded their studies for the day.
