Julia was sold to Quintus as a baby but her origins are unknown. She is fifteen years old and is one year older than Cornelia. Quintus allowed Julia to play with Cornelia as children due to the proximity of their age. As a slave, Julia wears simple linen tunics usually tied with a rope belt around her waist. Her brown hair is always tied up in a simple bun. The one thing that sets her apart from other slaves is the leather belt with gold threading given to her by Quintus and Cornelia as an indication of their fondness for her. In return for their care, Julia has spent her life as the protector and adviser of Cornelia. She knows just how dangerous upper class Roman society can be, and as a result, Julia developed a tough and cautious personality early on.

Cornelia was pampered from the moment she was born. Her father, Quintus, owns massive amounts of farmland that has been in the family for generations. Her equestrian upbringing is evident in her personality and in her appearance. Cornelia wears brightly colored silk tunics of ruby, emerald, and sapphire. The brooches that pin her dress are always made with precious jewels like pearls and rubies. The belts she wears around her waist often contain intricate designs and beading using precious stones. Gold bracelets of varying designs and sizes adorn her arms, and gold earrings, sometimes inlaid with tiny gems, decorate her ears. Cornelia's blonde hair is painstakingly curled and tied up with elaborate, jeweled hairpins that brilliantly shine. Her clothing marks her as a wealthy equestrian woman, and her haughty eyes look down on those around her. Cornelia is oblivious to the political world and spends her time socializing and pampering herself. However, she has a soft spot for those she loves. Cornelia lost her mother when she was a baby and as a result, she is very attached to her father. She treats Julia as a close friend and knows she can trust her.
