Barlam.Assignment 5

Marcus, a loyal soldier to Caesar, had spent the last 4 years fighting his battles against the Pompeians. Now finally the year is 45 BCE and the civil war is concluding.  With Caesar seeing the defeat of Pompey’s sons in Spain in March, the endless campaigns and sleepless nights were at a close. Marcus finally would be able to return home to see his family. He desperately missed his wife Julia, and the child that he left growing inside of her. His greatest motivation for surviving Caesar’s campaigns was to see the face of what he hoped would be a new born son.
With Caesar’s return to Rome and and his newly bestowed position of dictatorship, Marcus was sure he would be home soon.  However, an unforeseen twist took hold of his fate and presented Marcus with a situation he could not turn a blind eye to.  For his loyal service, and the insightful advice Marcus had provided during the many battles he shared with Caesar’s legions, he was offered a position, which to him, was quite prestigious. He was to serve underneath Mark Antony as his right hand man.
In the blink of an eye the year had changed to 44 BCE. Marcus had still not seen his family, but could not get himself to let go of  this opportunity. He felt so accomplished   seeing as how he had started as a low class youth, and now had become so close to the dictatorship. As time wore on, the sparkle of his new position started to fade and he remembered his family. Finally, Marcus remembered his priorities and decided to retire so he could be with them. Out on one last errand, he met with Servilius Casca, a man who seemed desperate to tell of something. It was here that Marcus first caught wind of the assassination plot on Caesar’s life.  Of course when he wanted to get out, something would drag him back in.  He rode off to tell Mark Antony and to save Caesar. He just prayed he would make it in time...
