Eli
is a 16 year old slave from Palatine Hill. He is medium height, has tanned
skin, with bulging muscles from the rigorous labor he is forced to do. His
modest and shy personality tends to make him an easy target for ridicule by his
master. Despite being shy, he is a confident young man. In other words, he
believes that he will advance his position in Roman society due to his
exceptional intelligence. He is required to make weekly trips to the Roman
Boarium for boar meat from the merchants. Although Eli is eager to advance his
lot in life but is discouraged by his master, Titus. His only hope for
advancement in society is to be emancipated. For clothes, he wears essentially
a large cloth tied around his waist, and no shoes. He is lucky, as many slaves
have no clothing.
Julia
is a 15 year old Senatorial daughter. She wears sandals, or soleae, and a
stola. The day she meet Eli, she is wearing a palla over the stola. She roams
the marketplace, running errands for her father. When she meets Eli and
develops feelings for him, but she struggles with her father due to the custom
of arranged marriages. Julia was married once before, at the age of 12, but her
husband has since passed away. She performed her husband’s eulogy (much like
Turia #330), and has been distraught since his death. The previous marriage was
arranged by her father, Marcus Julius Antinos. Much like Eli, Julia is a
confident youth who envisions a more integrated society. She believes that high
ranking officials choose to rile the lower classes against the Senatorial
class, which generates social class warfare. However, she also believes that
her peers abuse their position in society.
