Episode: Entertainment/Leisure Time
Marcus
could hardly sleep from the excitement of the circus procession that was set to
take place the following morning. The circus was one of the oldest events in
Rome and was very special to him because it was a family tradition to watch the
procession. As the son of a senator, Marcus had grown up in a religious
household and because all forms of entertainment at the circus were centered
around some sort of religious ritual, his family made it a huge importance to
go to this event, especially to see the carts that carried symbols of deities
that had a special place in the procession.
He
woke the next morning to the shuffling of his siblings and parents getting
ready to depart for the Circus Maximus. Upon arrival, Marcus was excited to see
the crowds of people filling the venue. When he was younger, his favorite part
of the circus parade was the armed dancers. As he grew older, he began to
appreciate the incense and vessel bearers that played a major role in pleasing
the gods. Religion was encouraged through his childhood but as a young adult
Marcus really found a new understanding for the importance of the sacrifices
and processions that took place at this event.
He
watched the chariot races with thousands of others that stood in the crowd. It
was very loud and he could hear the people cheering for their favored team, “Go
red! Rah Rah!” He wished that he could someday be a part of the procession and
entertain the rest of Roman society. He loved being in the spotlight and
dreamed that he could become a magistrate and lead the circus procession in a
chariot with the eyes of the crowd glorifying him.
