Assignment 8: Climax/Resolution

A Dream is a Wish Your Heart Makes

The moment she had been waiting for had finally arrived; Eugenia had saved up enough money to buy her freedom. However, this highly anticipated moment happened to also be the single most difficult decision she would ever have to make. The family was very fond of Eugenia, which is why her master had offered to free her on several occasions. She rejected these offers for two reasons: Eugenia in turn was rather fond of the family, and she wanted the satisfaction of independently earning her freedom. The latter overshadowed the first for the most part, but she had grown to love and care for these people that just the thought of leaving them hurt her deeply. Yet, it was young Titus Sergia Silus whom she really could not bear to depart from.

It had been a year now since he had been taken out of her care. Being old enough to be by his father’s side, it was his time to learn about what it meant to be a male in Roman society. Truth be told, it was the hardest separation she had experienced yet. To get her by, she took comfort in the fact that he was not entirely gone. The thought that he still lived under the same roof as her was eventually enough to put her heart at ease.

However, this complicated things even more for her. While she did not get the contact time with him that she would have liked, some invisible force prevented her. This required her to weigh her options. She lived a decent life in the household of Decimus Sergia Silus. Her lodging conditions were much nicer than she was used to, she always had plenty to eat, and she had a job she truly enjoyed. On the other hand, she could be the independent woman she always wanted to be and go to places she could never visit as a slave. When it came down to it, Eugenia knew what she needed to do.

Knock. Knock. Knock.

“Enter…Oh, hello Eugenia. To what do I owe this visit?”

“I have decided I would very much like to buy myself.”

For that was what she was essentially doing, Eugenia was going to buy herself back. Yet, it was so much more than that. She was going to buy the possibility of achieving her dreams, which is exactly what her parents would have wanted for her. She owed that to them.
