Assignment 7: entertainment/lesiure time

     Dangerous Entertainment
Albeit she was a slave, Eugenia was technically a member of her Master’s household. She was also fortunate to be favored and very much liked by all of the family members. As such, she had the opportunity to accompany Decimus Sergia Silus and his entire clan whenever they attended festival games. Today was just the beginning of a several days long celebration of Jupiter Best and Greatest and was also the day the family decided to attend the Ludi at the Circus Maximus for chariot racing.
Eugenia of course did not join the family in the seats. She was destined for the nether area where she was to stand along with the rest of the attending slaves. The majority of whom were household slaves she came to learn, finding that slaves who worked the field enjoyed far less leisure time and benefits as opposed to those who worked indoors of the house itself. She tended to keep to herself at these gatherings, but had become accustomed to standing with one woman in particular, Cornelia, who was also a nurse slave. However, she tended for the children in the household of Senator Lucius Flavius Scipio.

“Hello Eugenia. It has been quite some time since I saw you last. How are the children?”

“Growing strong as ever. Little Titus recently turned two. How are yours?”

“As bratty as ever and growing even more so by the day.”

The two erupted in laughter, but were soon drowned out by the noise of clapping and yelling that had exploded around the arena, which told them that the race was about to start. Focusing their attention at the starting line, Eugenia observed the various horses. She would never have believed it before, but chariot racing was rather dangerous. The last time she watched them ended in the death of a horse being trampled by the other chariot after the chariot it had been pulling overturned. It made her guilty for finding enjoyment in such an event. Nevertheless, Eugenia screamed just as loudly as soon as the dust kicked in the air and the chariots took off down the track.
