Barlam assignment 8

Marcus sat thinking about the journey he had faced. He could not believe fate’s plan for him thus far. Finally meeting his soulmate Julia in the market and then the Circus Maximus, only to be taken away by civil war and duty weeks later? Marcus struggled to accept that fate would have such a cruel plan for him. He realized that perhaps he could no longer wait for fate to bring him back to his beloved or the child he had never laid eyes upon that grew inside of her, before he was forced to leave. At that very moment, Marcus resolved to return home to his family and to cast off his sense of duty to Caesar. The only duty he now was concerned with was caring for his child and wife. As he packed his bags, Marcus remembered the last errand he had to do. He was to meet with Servilius Casca, a man who seemed desperate to tell of something. It was here that Marcus first caught wind of the assassination plot on Caesar’s life.  Of course when he wanted to get out, something would drag him back in.  He rode off to tell Mark Antony and to save Caesar. He just prayed he would make it in time.
As he rode, he once again was contemplating on fate. Deep down, Marcus knew he would not be able to save Caesar. Finally accepting what his father had once told him, that a man can do only and all that lies within his stars, he changed course for home. Pushing his horse faster and faster as he got closer, Marcus could sense something was wrong.
From a distance, he could see smoke. To his horror, he arrived to find his home engulfed in flames. He ran in the door screaming his wife’s name. Marcus found Julia cradling their child amongst the debris. He was too late. Marcus could not help but think once again about fate. Perhaps it was fate’s plan for him to save Caesar. Perhaps his family would still be alive if he had.  Utterly lost, Marcus sat outside and watched his life burn.
